ASD

Autism Spectrum Disorder is considered a life-long neurodevelopmental disability. This affects verbal and non-verbal communication. According to the Centre for Developmental Disability Health Victoria, the onset can be traced before 36 months and seen by:

Impairments in reciprocal social interactions.

Impairments in verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

Stereotyped behavior, interests and activities.

The spectrum of Autism is very wide and each person diagnosed with Autism has varying degrees of symptoms and needs. In school, this is usually addressed with a IEP, Individual Educational Plan, focusing on what accommodations will be needed for the child’s success.

STATISTICS:

At the CDC in Atlanta, the statistics state that about 1 in 88 children have been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

ASDs are reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.

ASDs are almost 5 times more common among boys (1 in 54) than among girls (1 in 252).
